iPhone 8 camera AI could go way beyond face detection

Apple may be working on a new AI camera system that would detect items in real time and automatically adjust the lighting to ensure better photos.

While digging through the firmware for Apple’s HomePod, developer Guilherme Rambo (great name, mate) discovered a possible iPhone 8 feature called SmartCam.

This code appears to show a host of preset scenes you might expect to see on a compact camera.

There’s snow, sport, sunset and sky, for example. However, there’s also scenes like baby, fireworks, foliage and pet.

This seems to suggest the iPhone 8’s camera will be able to automatically adjust key exposure settings within the photo.

Apple already users a similar image recognition tool to group photos together in the Photos app, but it looks like this took will work in real time (via AppleInsider).

Of course, the company has long had a facial recognition feature that ensures subjects are in focus. However, SmartCam appears to be well beyond that.

This feature was not announced at WWDC 2017 back in June. As such we’d expect it to be hardware specific, rather than a part of iOS 11.

HomePod treasure trove

The HomePod firmware, released by Apple to help developers get a sense for the device, is already proving to be a treasure trove of unreleased information.

The firmware contains the display size and RAM specs for the smart home speaker. It also seemed to confirm some iPhone 8 design details.

It also appears from the code, that the iPhone 8 will arrive with an infrared face unlock feature.
