Nintendo: The NX will be about games, not power

Nintendo is remaining incredibly coy on the details for its next console, the NX, despite having announced it will launch in March 2017.

But in a new interview with Bloomberg Nintendo America President Reggie File-Aime has made reference to the new system, in a respondse to a question about how it will stack up against the upcoming PS4 Neo and the Xbox Scorpio.

“For us, it’s not about specs, it’s not about teraflops, it’s not about the horsepower of a particular system,” he said. “For us, it’s about the content. Nintendo is a content focused company, we create content that makes people smile.

“So for us we’re focused on bringing our best entertainment to both the Wii U as well as the NX in the future. So for us, whatever Microsoft and Sony are doing in terms of talking about new systems, that’s for them to fight out in that red ocean.”

Of course, both the Wii and Wii U were underpowered compared to their rivals, but from its launch Wii’s unique technology was compelling enough to not let a lack of horsepower damage its success.

Meanwhile the Wii U didn’t have such a unique proposition but still remained less powerful than the Xbox One and PS4. As a result the console ended up falling between two stools. If the NX isn’t going to go to war with Microsoft and Sony on power, it will need to have something special.

Motion of the ocean

A recent report claimed the NX release was pushed back because a virtual reality feature was being implemented, and in the Bloomberg interview Reggie was asked about where Nintendo currently stands on VR.

“We’ve been looking at the VR space since the days of the Virtual Boy,” he said. “With us, we want to make sure our next content is going to be mainstream, mass-market approachable, and when something like VR is at that point, you can expect Nintendo to be there.”

That doesn’t sound too hopeful for NX VR, but then it depends on what’s considered “mass-market”. With PS VR set to launch this October, there’s an expectation that Sony will help push virtual reality into the mainstream with a more accessible, plug-and-play, high-end VR experience.

But Reggie also noted that Nintendo has itself helped push new technologies in the past with the Wii (motion tech) and the DS (touch screen).

“There was a lot of gyroscopic technology out there in the marketplace, but it took the Wii and the Wii remote to really make it mainstream,” he said.

Could it do the same with VR? The NX dream might suddenly seem a little less hopeful, but we wouldn’t rule it out completely.

The truth about the wii, people did not know what they were buying and then when the wii U came out they did not make the same mistake again. Wii was just a game cube with a new name and look.

Another reason for the wii selling was because they were sold out all the time and this tricked people in to thinking it was a must have but then it was a must hide

Disappointed? Yes. It appears Nintendo do not realise we want powerful consoles. It's why we loved the SNES and why their lustre has tarnished with every passing console. If they refuse to release a fairly competent console with more power than the PS4 (not Neo per se) then I think it's time to close the chapter on Nintendo.

I don't think they're on the same page, they just don't get the current demographic gaming scene at all and that's depressing. The WiiU had great games, but no one bought it as it lacked the power to provide stand out experiences to the mass market and this in a time where PS4 and Xbox gamers are demanding more power from their own systems.

I don't see why it's so difficult for them to see this is an issue beyond alienating controls. Make a powerful console, it's what people care about whether you care to admit it or not.

Unless the NX is focused on portable gaming…

I know what you mean. I think that Nintendo is just in a very difficult situation, and I too would like to have a Powerfull Console from Nintendo again, but then again, it would probably be the same as my other consoles, and for a 400€ Price tag, I wouldn't buy that.
If they make a System like the Wii U, just get the price right this time, I'd be on board for, say, 300€ at launch. I trust them with their specs.

But I too think that what the Scorpio is aiming for should've been the NX. Pack some nice Launch Games (Zelda is already one, a Metroid would instantly have me and so on) and I'd be willing pay PS3 level prices for such a machine, but the reality is, that I would probably be one of the few. It's just depressing to think that Nintendo is kinda backing out of the market that I want them in, so I completely understand and agree with you in some way^^

How ignorant are you you said nobody bought the Wii U I did you didn't know that and are wrong about your assumption.Everybody want's power I think that's just you the ps4 was the most powerful console but that didn't stop it becoming total garbage. At the end of the day game's make the console not power. The 3ds had weak hardware and crushed the vastly superior ps vita why because of the game's power is nothing without great game's look at the subpar ps4 for an example of that.If you hate nintendo that much just don't buy there game's or console's and shut up and let people who enjoy there game's to continue to support them like I do.

This is a complete misguided comment Paul. The Wii WAS an overclocked GameCube – well documented by developers. You call people 'morons' yet you reciprocate comments that are fabricated from pure fanaticism rather than common sense, objectification and facts. ?

So about 40 Million PS4's sold in 2.5 years and you consider that garbage? 600 games with many being pretty darn awesome (not most, just many). Sony making great profits.

VR coming, and the upgraded Neo projected to sell well, and if they do a PS5 which they almost certainly will then it will be fully compatible with every game.

Oh yeah, sounds like total garbage to me. apparently profits and large units sold doesn't translate into success?

"Japanese tech giant Sony swung to a net profit in the second quarter of its financial year, driven by strong sales of its PlayStation 4 video games. "

XB1 also coming along great. Scorpio APU probably about 2x CPU perf and 4.5x GPU perf (zen/polaris), and their XBOX 360 support also carries through (heck, may see 60FPS upgrade for some titles).

Meanwhile, what exactly is Nintendo's plan?

I guess if YOU like the games it makes the console successful and everything else sucks, or did I not read the situation correctly?

I love Nintendo but I would be very sad in the Wii U was my only console. It can go months at a time without a major release. The simple matter is, there would be much more third party games for the Wii U if it was similar in power to the PS4.

I completely agree with what you said. It doesn't take a detective to notice that @Paul Barnes is a Nintendo fan boy. Look at him commenting at every (valid) critical comment with fanaticism. Calm down, don't try to argue the facts.

If Nintendo are a "content focused company", then my PC and PS4 are sat here ready and waiting for Mario Kart, Zelda, F-Zero etc. They should stop making hardware; most of their hardware innovations have been in controllers. Nintendo could simply make a Nintendo controller for PC, PS4, XBOX, and release games across those formats that use the controller. People would love it.

I agree. Reserve judgement until the console is released. But given every single console release since 1997 has been underwhelming it doesn't install much confidence. It's not a secret. It's why everyone is very vocal about their hardware. Nintendo have listened though, Zelda Breath of the Wild is testament to that. So it just depends if they want to sell to gamers or casual. I'm going for the latter.

Most third party game's are trash with there broken game's which you have to wait for patches just to even play there damn game's.No third party support who care's who even's need's them.Nintendo usually make's better quality glitch free unbroken game's than the subpar offerings from third party developer's.

Not interested in specs or terraflops but are interested in VR.

That makes no sense. You can't have a decent VR system unless there is the power to drive it.

    Wii VR anyone?

The PS4 library is solid. Again, people speak with their wallets. Just because it's not to your taste don't speak for everyone else. The PS4 IS (not was) the most powerful console currently on the market. We didn't just pull these comments from no where, the chipsets and CPU's dictate what kind of power can be processed and at the moment Sony's has the bigger numbers. That's not to say it's powerful, but compared to current consoles it is the clear winner.

But if graphics are your true vice then PC is the way forward for a hearty price. The WiiU in my opinion is still a fine console, underpowered maybe, shame it didn't succeed and that is unfortunate.

You make good points. Yes, the limitation never USED to be an issue in all respects. But times have changed and competitors are producing content on par and exceeding that of Nintendo – my opinion entitle of course. But that said Nintendo do make great games and my loyalty and nostalgia will bring me back for the best part.

Really though – the new Zelda does nothing different in terms of game mechanics or experience (it's dragons dogma reskinned) but it does differinciate from other Zrlda titles and for Nintendo fans that's a great step.

This all said I'll buy an NX because I'm an ol' fart and I love Nintendo greatly, partly I'll buy for my kids as I want them to have those experiences I had during the SNES era. But all said and told they cannot compete in the gaming market (red ocean) with underpowered hardware which is why I believe they'll be going for casuals (blue ocean). Reggie basically said that plain as day. Gamers are not their focus, it's people who play on smartphones.

Good idea as that market is poorly developed and Nintendo can and will dominate it. Then, they might come back to gamers.

Huh? The PS4 is an excellent console with a very strong game library. You don't know what you're talking about.

  17. Reply Garret Tromp June 19, 2016 at 12:06 am

R.I.P. NX, they said the exact same thing when the Wii U came out and look what happened. The Wii casuals are gone, their playing games on their tablets and phones. They still think their not competing with Xbox One and PS4 and that's why they're going to become the next Sega. The only difference is their IP sell millions, they would profit more by becoming a third party developer rather than making hardware because their hardware sucks. Technology is advancing so fast, and Nintendo insists on staying in the past and this is from someone who owns all their consoles and bought a Wii U. End Rant.

Ps4 was the most powerful console yet but it still turned out to be garbage as the game's library was subpar on ps4.I don't buy console's for power I buy them for the game's always have. The ps vita was the most powerful handheld but got crushed by the inferior hardware of the 3ds why because of the game's.Game's make or break a console power doesn't automatically make a console great game's do anyone who doesn't realise that is dumb.

The N64 was the most powerful console of it's generation and the Gamecube was too, very strong.

I really do care more for the content Nintendo brings to the Table. For their first party, Hardware limitation never seemed to be an issue.

Tell me, would you be more interested if Nintendo would throw in a console that does EXACTLY what your XBOX ONE, PS4 and PC does?

  22. Reply Heaven Aufderhar June 19, 2016 at 8:52 pm

No, no, nooooooo! Third party dev support, that's it Nintendo, that's all you need to get back in the game here in the states. Blu Ray player, multimedia support. Mario bros and Zelda part 50 are great but you gotta give serious gamers what they want, an awesome all in one system. I wanna be able to play super smash bros and Madden or freaking stupid NBA 2k on one system.

  23. Reply Josh Lebsack June 20, 2016 at 2:06 am

Look, I love Nintendo as much as anybody, but that's just ridiculous. They are not the only developer making great games, far from it. And there are many popular genres of games that they don't make at all.

  24. Reply Stevie Keebler June 20, 2016 at 3:46 am

Not true. I love Ninty a great deal and I own a WiiU. I'm agnostic and objective in my preference. It all comes down to market end of the day and I'm firmly in that 'gamer' demographic.

The console market is doing well but underpowered on all fronts. Many do care about power and advancement – otherwise we'd all have kept our 5th gen consoles, right? It's why there's an inherent shift in adopting PC gaming from console users and why Microsoft is covering that base by shifting Xbox from a hardware to a software brand.

10 million console sales is not enough in 4.5 years. PS4 quadrupled that in 1/3rd of the time a significant cry that power does matter – and Sony have the games to back it up, as Nintendo would.

3ds is a casual market as most handhelds – Vita failed because it hit the wrong demographic by appealing to gamers not casuals and gamers want power.

The NX I suspect will cater to the casual market as Nintendo gently cut their ties with gamers. They simply don't have the heart or the profit margins – whereas they do with smartphone users. After that, who knows?

Just because a console was sold out why would it trick people into thinking it's a must have lol you have to try the console out first to know if it's any good.People did not know what they were buying when the Wii and wii U came along well those people must of been moron's because I knew exactly what they were. The Wii wasn't just a gamecube it was more powerful and had motion control's so weren't the same console sorry.
