Watch a hernia surgery live in VR

Surgical video library site Giblib and camera maker 360fly team up for a public broadcast of the procedure in 360-degree video.

Doctors and medical students — or people who just want to watch anything in virtual reality — will be able to immerse themselves in a live surgery tomorrow.

Giblib, an online platform for surgeons to share medical lectures and surgical videos, will live stream a hernia operation using 360fly’s 360-degree 4K camera on July 28 at 11 a.m. PT. The broadcast is open to the public, though you need to register on Giblib’s site to watch.

Dr. Shirin Towfigh at the 90210 Surgery Medical Center & Precision ASC will perform the surgery and be available for questions before and after the one-hour procedure.

This is the second surgery Giblib will broadcast in VR with help from 360fly and its streaming partner Livit. The first, held in May, was private. This will be the first opportunity for Giblib viewers around the world to see the surgeon, staff and patient all at once.
