Android Nougat update: when can I get it

HTC, Huawei and LG

Android Nougat is the name of Google’s latest variation of the popular mobile platform. Now–finally– the focus can turn to the important question. The one that every Android smartphone owner will be shouting from the rooftops.

“When is Android Nougat update coming to my phone?”

While Android 7.0 Nougat is deep into its fourth round of developer previews, it isn’t slated for public release until “later this summer,” according to Google.

And at that, the updated operating system will likely only make its way to a handful of phones and tablets within the first few months of its release.

Will the wait for Nougaty goodness be as long (or, in many cases, never-ending for some) as Marshmallow was? Here’s to hoping that doesn’t happen again.

If you’re worried, keep this in mind: it was shocking (in a good way) when Google opened up the Nougat preview to the Sony Xperia Z3. If that move is any indication, then a lot of work has likely already been done behind the scenes to grease the wheels, so to speak, with other phone manufacturers.

We’ll keep this A-to-Z list updated as more smartphone manufacturers announce support for Android Nougat.

Android Nougat update for HTC 10 when can I get it

HTC

Shortly after the formal announcement of Nougat, which disappointingly dashed the chances of our second favorite option, Namey McNameface, HTC shot out of its seat on Twitter to share that a few of its more recent devices will receive Android 7 support.

If you own the HTC One M9, the HTC One A9 or the more recent HTC 10, you’re in luck. Owners of the now-defunct Nexus 9 tablet, who can participate in the developer preview now, will be treated to the update earlier than the phones. And while it’s a bit sad to see the HTC One M8 left out, you’re probably due for an upgrade soon enough anyway.

An announcement of support is assuring, but the fine print in the tweet reveals that HTC has yet to receive a final version of Nougat to tweak for its devices.

If you’re curious about what the process of adapting stock Android for each manufacturer looks like, you should definitely visit this site. While this exact workflow is specific to HTC, it’s likely that each company taking it on goes through a similar set of steps.

Android Nougat update for Huawei P9 and Huawei Mate 8 when can I get it

Huawei

It’s already been confirmed that the Huawei-made Nexus 6P will be one of the first to be treated to Android Nougat on its launch day. But what about the rest of the Huawei squad?

Out of the lot, the Huawei P9, decked out with its Leica optics, is the most probable candidate.

Of course, the Huawei P8, Huawei Mate 8 are also fine devices that we’d love to see give some Nougat treatment, but we’ll have to see.

We’ve reached out to Huawei for an official statement.

Android Nougat update for LG G5 when can I get it

LG

If you’re asking us, we think that a LG’s recent (and rather inventive) batch of smartphones will learn a few, new tricks from Android Nougat.

In case you needed a clue, this includes the dual camera-equipped LG G5 and its modular Friends and the Frankenstein-of-a-phone, the LG V10.

The Android 7.0 update could stretch further into LG’s back catalog, but we’ve reached out for official comment to find out. There are many people still carrying around the LG G4 that hope for this year’s OS update to last year’s phone.

Moto, Nextbit, OnePlus

Android Nougat update for Moto X and Moto Z when can I get it

Moto

Moto has yet to provide a comment on which of its devices will be updating with the sweet, new Android OS.

The recently announced Moto Z and Moto Z Force, with their many MotoMods, are each a gimme for Nougat compatibility. But what about the others?

Our fingers are crossed for the Moto X of 2015, as well as the Moto X Play, Moto X Style and Moto X Force (AKA Moto Droid Turbo 2 in the US).

Let’s get crazy: Android Nougat could even make its way to the budget-friendly Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus. Are you listening Moto? We’d love that.

Android Nougat update for Nextbit Robin when can I get it

Nextbit

The Nextbit Robin didn’t wait for the formal name of Google’s next mobile OS to confirm support. Just a few weeks ago, Nextbit stated its intent to push out the update to Robin owners as soon as possible.

Well, that was easy.

Android Nougat update for OnePlus 3 when can I get it

OnePlus

Hot off its release of the OnePlus 3, we wouldn’t be too surprised if the startup had a Nougat-flavored announcement up its sleeves.

As for the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus One, it’s more likely that the good news will also spread to the former and not the latter. But who knows, maybe there’s a surprise for us in store after all.

Samsung, Sony and ZTE

Samsung

We’ve reached out to Samsung for official comment on which of its smartphones will receive Android Nougat.

Let’s just say that if you own any of the devices below, it’s almost a guarantee that your world will become more Nougat-y than normal later on this year.

Phew, Samsung has its work cut out for the next few months.

Sony

While many manufacturers struggled to update their devices to Android Marshmallow, this was no problem for Sony.

The Sony Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z2 all received the update to Android 6.

Now, it’s unlikely that this complete batch will make the grade this time around. But if last year’s exclusion of the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact are any indication, the Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z2 may hit the cutting room floor.

A Sony representative shared with TechRadar that “we do not have any statements or information to share on Android Nougat.”

Android Nougat udpate: when can I get it on my phone

ZTE

Let us not forget about ZTE! After all, its next phone, the ZTE Axon 7, has already been confirmed as the world’s first Google Daydream phone. Sure, there will be many more down the line, but you never forget your first.

The phone will debut with Android Marshmallow, but is said to be on course to receive the Android Nougat update in a timely manner.

On the other hand, the company’s previous phone, the ZTE Axon, isn’t likely to receive the sweet upgrade.

Stay tuned, as we’re going to continue prodding each manufacturer for information until they fess up to their complete Android Nougat plans.

Samsung is still yet to deliver Marshmallow for their UK Galaxy Tab S2 across all it's editions. Some editions have it and some countries but…

My UK Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 Wifi is still on Android 5.0.2.

Marshmallow is important as it greatly increases battery life.

Probably not…the Galaxy S6 (on Verizon) got Marshmallow 6 months after it's general availability, so the earliest we could expect Nougat would be second quarter of next year.
