Buying Guide: 10 best wireless headphones available today

Best Wireless Headphones

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard the news that Apple has taken the controversial step of removing the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack from its new iPhone 7.

Now, no one would blame you if you want to continue using your existing headphones with the new iPhone – all you need to do is use the lightning adaptor which has been bundled in with the phone.

That said, if you’d rather save that port for, I don’t know, say charging your phone or connecting it to your car, there’s never been a better time to invest in a pair of quality wireless headphones, which use Bluetooth rather than wires to connect to your device.

Whereas previously they suffered from poor sound quality and even poorer battery life, nowadays the latter has improved beyond all recognition and although you’ll still get the best sound from a pair of wired headphones, the quality of audio given by Bluetooth has improved considerably.

So if you’re looking to cut the cord, check out our guide to the best wireless headphones available today.

There are certain qualities we all like in a set of headphones and these have ’em: sleek design, great sound and long-lasting comfort. However, the signature feature in Beats headphones is one that some people may not be so fond of, namely, their heavy lean on bass.

Thankfully, Beats is moving on from their bass-heavy past and moving to a more balanced sound. This is evident as ever in the Beats Solo 2 Wireless and it’s about time.

Parrot Zik 2

10. Sony MDR-1000X

Noise-cancelling headphones that care about Hi-Res Audio

Acoustic design: Closed | Weight: 275 grams | Frequency response: 4Hz – 40kHz | Drivers: 40mm | Driver type: Dynamic | Sensitivity: 103dB | Impedance: 46 Ohms | Battery life: 20 hours | Wireless range: 30 feet | NFC: Yes

See more Sony MDR-1000X deals

Quick Attention mode Noise cancellation Lengthy battery life Finicky Ambient Noise mode

The MDR-1000X are definitely the closest competitor to Bose’s QuietComfort series I’ve ever had the pleasure of testing. Some high-end codecs (LDAC, AAC and aptX) help the 1000X sound even better than the QC35s, but ultimately the noise canceling is a bit less effective in Sony’s pair of cans.

What should drive your decision on whether to buy the MDR-1000X is your music player – if you’re a Sony Xperia owner, you’d be hard-pressed to find a pair of headphones that sound as good as these with noise canceling tech built-in. Even if you’re not, Sony’s wares are still worth a listen – and maybe a purchase – if you aren’t too put out by its $400 (£330 or AU$700) price tag.

We’re constantly reviewing new wireless headphones, but let us know if there is a set that you’d like us to take a look at.

There are two names in audio when it comes to speakers, headphones, earbuds… sound quality without compromise – Bowers & Wilkins (or B&W). They don't release crap until they perfect it. Now we have wireless P5's. P7's were just announced. The C5's are wired earbuds – the best you will hear. Expect wireless soon. I can hardly believe a discussion like this takes place without the mention of these. I would think the cost, but you have Sennheisers, Bose (are you all deaf???) and Beats?????????? It's all honestly kind of silly when you compress the crap out of your music onto your iPhone. You're not going to hear an orchestra,,, but the B&W's will bring you as close as you're going to get.

They need to be Wireless(Bluetooth) Over-Ear and Loud as F–k.
I went on Sony .com and there's like a million Bluetooth Headphones there and it's impossible to choose which ones would sound best. I'd never by Beats because I'm not a rapper. I had a Bose on ear Soundlink and it was decent and an Urbanite XL on ear and it was better but I know that Sony is god of all types of Technology. Of course from Playstation to Televisions to Headphones.
If you know any over-ear Sony's that would be Wireless(Bluetooth) that would be loud as f–k. Definitely hit me up
    Thanks!

Yes I've tried them. Sony have a lot of bass without too much compromise everywhere else (unlike Beats). Sennheiser are not as bass heavy in my opinion, but they do ok. Beats are all bass and everything else sucks. Beats are also quite flimsy. Not worth the money.

Best headphones for the money are really the Phillips L2 (but they aren't for bass heads). If you want the best bass headphones go for Vmoda M100.

Loudness is more to do with your source and resistance.

Can anyone help me here? I'm looking for Bass and Loudness
    – Beats: Studio Wireless
    – Bose: Soundlink Around-Ear
    – Sennheiser: Momentum 2.0 Wireless
    – Sony: Extra Bass Wireless
Which one should I get? I listen to mostly Hard Rock and Metal. I want something that will give the extreme Bass from Metallica and will be loud as F— when I blast Guns N' Roses Live

And where are XTZ Headphone Divine and Philips M2BT..?!

  11. Reply Luis Schultz October 2, 2016 at 3:58 am

I'm not trying to be rude but how do you know for reference? did you try both?
I had an Urbanite XL from Sennheiser but the earbuds were too small so I know that Sennheiser is top notch in quality but I'm looking more for Loudness and Bass
Thanks for the reply Mr. Ninja

You know it's funny, Beats have been opened up and stripped down, and their actual quality was extremely poor, and there were bits of useless metal in there, whose sole purpose was to make them feel weightier.

Can someone recommend headphones with clear sound? I don't care about bass all that much, and preferably ~$200 also, i don't want them to be big.

  16. Reply Lester Simonis October 2, 2016 at 7:29 am

Sony or Sennheiser, for you I would go for Sony.

  17. Reply Miss Luella Hegmann DVM October 2, 2016 at 7:39 am

The fact that you put Beats in here and left Bose out makes me completely disregard this article.

I tried the Bose today. Not bad. Not for good for you though not enough bass. I can see why you'd like the Urbanite XL more, it's designed to have more bass.

1ABT definately has more bass than the Bose, but not as much as some make it out to have. I found the Sony more exciting

I guess this site didn't like me linking to head Fi but google "headfi" it's a great forum.

I literally just bought a Sony 1ABT today. I don't find the bass too strong (I don't like strong bass myself). I think you should try a Sony XB950BT. I believe that has a bass boost function.

Not sure about the ZX770BN sorry.
