Dragon dialling: Chinese smartphones, Indian market

India is the fastest growing smartphone market in the world and is set to become the second largest by 2017 by overtaking the US, but behind China, as per IDC.

THERE’S NO stopping the influx of Chinese smartphone brands in the country. From just 12 in 2013 (Q1), the number of Chinese smartphone brands available in India jumped to 57 in two years (Q1 2015), as per consulting firm Counterpoint Technology Market Research.

There is a boost in their market share too. From 15% in the last quarter of CY 2014, Chinese smartphone vendors now command as much as 22% of the Indian market, data available from American market research, analysis and advisory firm International Data Corporation (IDC) till end of CY 2015 show.

India is the fastest growing smartphone market in the world and is set to become the second largest by 2017 by overtaking the US, but behind China, as per IDC. In CY 2015, 25.6 million smartphones were shipped in India—up 15.4% from 22.2 million units for the same period last year, IDC notes.

With a slowing smartphone market in China, most vendors, including Chinese players, are looking to leverage India’s growth potential. A readily available online market also negates the need for a complex distribution network.

Jaipal Singh, market analyst, client devices, IDC, says Chinese smartphone shipment spiked 71% in Q42015 over the previous year. Singh adds, “Good quality, big discounts by e-tailers and higher specs at lower prices are key factors for which Chinese smartphones are preferred.”
