Google self-driving car project’s CTO Chris Urmson quits

Google’s self-driving project is losing not one, but three executives. The key person quitting though is the project’s chief technical officer Chris Urmson.

Google’s ambitious self-driving car project has hit an obstacle of sorts after the project’s Chief Technical Officer (CTO), Chris Urmson, announced his departure. “After leading our cars through the human equivalent of 150 years of driving and helping our project make the leap from pure research to developing a product that we hope someday anyone will be able to use, I am ready for a fresh challenge,” Urmson wrote on Medium without giving specifics about his future plans.

It’s not just Urmson either, and CNET reports that two other key Google employees are also set to quit. These two employees, Jiajun Zhu and Dave Ferguson, worked on the software part of the project. Zhu was reportedly the principal software engineer for the project, while Ferguson was another software lead. There is however no official word on their departure, and Google‘s parent company Alphabet did not respond to a request for confirmation.

Alphabet only commented on Urmson’s departure, and calling him a key member of the team, wished him well. “Chris has been a vital force for the project, helping the team move from a research phase to a point where this life-saving technology will soon become a reality. He departs with our warmest wishes,” the company was quoted as saying.

John Krafcik, CEO of the self-driving car project, wished Urmson well in a tweet, saying, “Chris is an incredible colleague [and] leader. Thank you for your passion & humility. Good luck on your new adventures!”
