Here’s how Pokémon GO may change smartphone manufacturing

The continuing popularity of Pokémon GO could mark the return of smartphones with bigger and removable batteries.

The recently launched Pokémon GO game has created quite the buzz, and is currently the talk of the town despite having launched in only a few countries. It is not only changing how people are playing mobile games, but its continuing popularity could also drive smartphone companies to insert a large battery, making smartphones thicker. “As Pokémon GO continues to gain steam, smartphone manufacturers will turn out devices that have features aimed specifically at this next generation of smartphone users — mobile phone users that are actually mobile,” Slashgear.com reported on Saturday.

Pokémon GO is not going to drive innovation in battery power storage all on its own. ”What will drive the need for better batteries is the continued success of Pokémon GO and resulting apps and games, the report noted. We will also likely see the return of the removable, replaceable battery as a big selling point — again, if Pokémon GO lasts, the report added.

The newly-launched famous Augmented Reality (AR) game Pokémon Go has overtaken Twitter in terms of daily users and has seen people spending more time on its app than on Facebook. This is how the game works.

It uses the GPS capabilities of your device in conjunction with Google Maps to “place” creatures in real world locations, which you then try to find using your device as a guide. Once you are in proximity to the “placed” creature, you then use your device’s camera to “view” the creature and try to “capture” it.

The Pokemon Go is available on Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store in countries like the US, Japan and Australia, Philippines, New Zealand, Britain and Germany. Nintendo has promised to soon roll out the game in another 200 countries, including India, Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia.
