HTC Vive virtual reality headset sold out in 10 minutes

HTC’s Vive virtual reality headset had gone on sale for the first time in the US. The company claims 15,000 units of the device were sold out in the first 10 minutes of the sale.

HTC‘s Vive virtual reality headset appears to be off to a good start. It has sold more than 15,000 units of the Vive within its first 10 minutes on sale. These are the first Vive pre-orders, so thousands and thousands of people who may have been waiting over a year to buy the headsets, are reportedly rushing to get their order in first, claims The Verge in a report.

The Vive costs 799 dollars and requires a high-end gaming PC. At present, only limited people have access to it. The headset doesn’t ship until April 5, putting HTC just behind Oculus VR’s March 28th release date for the Rift. Preorders for the Rift, which is HTC’s biggest competition right now, began in early January, selling for $599. Oculus hasn’t revealed any sales figures, but company co-founder Palmer Luckey said pre-orders were doing much better than expected.

HTC recently unveiled the second-generation VR headset at CES 2016. Called the Vive Pre, this new headset improves on design, and also includes a front-facing camera. As the ‘Pre’ in the nomenclature suggests, this is essentially meant for developers ahead of the final launch sometime in April.

One of the talking points of the Vive Pre is the aforementioned front-facing camera that essentially blends the virtual world and real world. In other words, when the user is immersed in the virtual world he will be aware of the real world through the camera.
