India celebrates her 70th year of independence today, and Google has dedicated a doodle on its homepage to this special occasion. The doodle marks the Indian Independence Day by remembering ‘Tryst with Destiny’. The doodle shows an image of Parliament House before the Indian Constituent Assembly and remembering the first speech Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave at the Red Fort after India got Independence in 1947.

The Tryst with Destirny speech by Jawaharlal Nehru, first prime minister of independent India, on the eve of Independence and is considered to be one of the greatest speeches in the world till date.

It so happened that the Constituent Assembly met on August 14 in the afternoon, and session continued the session tillmidnight. It was then decided that Jawaharlal Nehru would begin his speech a few minutes before the clock hits 12. The moment the clock struck 12, the British flag coming down and the Tricolour was hoisted. It is a day when, after 200 years of British rule, India was finally free. The day we all remember as Independence Day.

Google has also quoted few sentences from the speech which reads, “Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now that time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of today’s midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.”
