Instagram crosses 500 million monthly active users

Instagram gets over 95 million posts and 4.2 billion likes every day.

The source of all the cute pet videos, and the platform for all the Throwback Thursdays, is growing at a good rate. At a time when some social media platforms like Twitter are struggling, Instagram has just gone past the half-a-billion mark. Instagram has announced that it now has over 500 million monthly active users, and around 60 percent (300 million) of them are active on a daily basis. To put this number into perspective, Twitter has a monthly user base of 320 million, which means the monthly traffic on Twitter is the same as Instagram’s daily user traffic.

Although Instagram slowly began to gain popularity after it was bought by Facebook in 2012 in $1 billion deal, over past two years, the user base of Instagram has almost doubled in numbers. With increasing popularity worldwide, 80 percent of Instagram’s users are from outside the United States. The photo sharing network witnesses over 95 million posts each day, along with 4.2 billion likes being hit every day.

In the infograph below, Instagram shows the most popular trends. One of the most popular, and personally my favorite, is the #weeklyfluff trend about the most adorable pets, has over 4 million posts under it. More than 82 million users on Instagram create posts under the outfit of the day hashtag and a whopping 325 million posts under Throwback Thursdays.

Fun fact – The most popular account on Instagram is Selena Gomez’s with over 85 million followers.

With increasing popularity, Instagram has turned its focus to businesses as well, and last year added ads to the feed. Also, a couple of years ago Instagram worked a lot on its filter and editing tools, along with launching stand alone apps like Layout, Boomerang and Hyperlapse.

Not long ago, Instagram announced some big changes to its news feed, showing the best feeds on top. Essentially, the posts now appear in a non-chronological order giving preference to the most popular ones. Instagram has also revamped its interface and logo recently.
