Moto Z and Moto Mods will launch in India by October

The Moto Mods are snap on accessories that add modular functionalities to the Moto Z.

Lenovo‘s latest Moto flagship smartphone, the Moto Z, will launch in India in September-October along with the global launch. “Mods with the Moto Z will define a new category of products,” Aymar de Lencquesaing, Senior Vice President, Lenovo Group, Co-President, Mobile Business Group, Chairman & President, Motorola Mobility, said at a media briefing today.

Lenovo unveiled the Moto Z last week at the company’s annual signature event, which took place in San Francisco this year. The Moto Z features top-of-the-line specifications including QHD display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 SoC, 4GB RAM, 13-megapixel rear camera with OIS and 4K video recording, 5-megapixel selfie camera, and 2,600mAh battery with Turbo Charging support. The main USP, however, are the mods which can be snapped to the back of the phone to add new functionality.

At the launch, Lenovo had showcased mods to add battery capacity, speaker and even a Pico projector, and promised more will be launched along with the smartphone in September. These mods will be priced between $50 and $200.

Lencquesaing acknowledged the importance of India in Lenovo’s smartphone plans, where it already claims to have nine percent market share and last year’s revenues were in excess of $1 billion. The company already has manufacturing capacity of 6 million smartphones per year under the government’s Make in India initiative. It could look at ramping up production to meet local demand.

“We intend to continue to invest and grow our market share in India. We started early and started with online only. We now have nine percent market share and will now come offline as well,” he said, announcing the company’s plans to start retailing in offline retail stores as well.
