Munshi Premchand with a Google doodle on his 136th birth anniversary

On what would have been his 136th birthday, the today’s Google Doodle pays tribute to the multitude stories told by Indian author Munshi Premchand.

Google is today celebrating the renowned Indian author Munshi Premchand’s 136th birth anniversary. Born as Dhanpat Rai, Premchand, or as he is better known, Munshi Premchand took birth on July 31, 1880 in an Uttar Pradesh village called Lamhi. “Today’s homepage celebrates a man who filled many pages (of a different kind) with words that would forever change India’s literary landscape. Born Dhanpat Rai in a small village in northern India, the renowned author produced more than a dozen novels, 250 short stories, and a number of essays, many under the pen name Premchand,” Google wrote on its doodle page.

Most of us have grown up reading Premchand, and Godaan (1936), Nirmala (1995), Rangbhoomi (1987) and Kafan (1936) are some of his most famous writings. Many contemporary Indian authors draw inspiration from his work. However, Munshi Premchand, who joined the non-cooperation movement led by Mahatma Gandhi in the 1920s, drew inspiration from Gandhi himself for a lot of his later work like Namak ke Daroga. Consequently, Premchand’s writings mostly were based around important social issues.

Although the genre would be fiction, but the motif and setup of his work was extremely realistic, which eventually came to be recognized as Premchand’s style of writing in the history of Hindi literature.

Many of Munshi Premchand’s writings were also adapted by the Indian Cinema. Movies like Sadgati, Shatranj Ke Khilari, Godaan, Gaban, Oka Oori Katha and others were based on his work.

After being elected as the President of Progressive Writers’ Association in 1936, and giving the world his most famous work Godaan, Premchand died of ill health on 8 October 1936 in Varanasi.
