Pokémon GO hunting goes wrong, shows how augmented reality can be dangerous

The dangers of augmented reality games and apps are not just restricted to Pokémon GO, but virtual reality based apps too.

Soon after launching the augmented reality-based game, Pokémon GO earlier this week, it quickly got the required traction with a lot of players stumbling upon Pokémon at weirdest places. The game uses your location and smartphone camera to guide you to catch Pokémon in your surroundings. However, the hunt to catch them all seems to have gone for some.

A popular YouTuber Lanceypooh recorded his Pokémon GO hunting adventure as he headed out to chase them in the woods. However, while following the Pokéradar, Lancey’s adventurous trip took an unexpected scary turn as he accidentally intruded someone’s privacy. To make matters worse, things quickly got escalated when the owner mistook it as trespassing of the property and open fired at Lancey and his friends.

Fortunately, they managed to escape without getting injured. The YouTuber did upload the video (embedded below) and you can skip to 5:20 to watch that part. Spotted by TheNextWeb on Reddit, the authenticity of the video appears to be questionable. There are chances wherein it may turn out to be staged.

In another news, the virtual reality game lead a teenage girl in the US to a dead body, Independent reports. The 19-year-old-girl managed to climb over a fence near a natural water resource to find the AR Pokémon character on her smartphone, only to stumble upon a dead body. She later on called emergency services to take care of the situation.

If these two instances weren’t enough, there has been one more incident in Austraila, where players barged into Darwin police station to catch a character called Sandshrew, the publication reports. The police department took the incident casually by warning Pokémon GO players to stay away from the police station.

While augmented reality and virtual reality has a great potential, it does pose a severe threat. Take an example of Google Glass – the wearer gets all the information including weather, text messages, phone calls and maps right in front of the eye, but it is also a source of distracting at the same time, especially for drivers. Same is the case with Microsoft’s HoloLens, HTC’s Vive and the Oculus Rift too.
