PS4 Neo expected as Sony makes September 7 PlayStation event official

One day after the rumor hit, Sony makes it official.

Sony has officially invited journalists to a press conference in New York City on September 7, where an upgraded PlayStation 4 is almost certain to be the big reveal.

The emailed invitations come one day after reports hit the web that the gaming giant was locking in to the first Wednesday in September as the date for its next big announcement. And while the invitation simply says “PlayStation Meeting,” it’s hard to imagine that the company would be showcasing anything else in such a high-profile venue.

Andrew House, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, had confirmed that an updated version of the PS4 was on the drawing board in a pre-E3 interview with the Financial Times in June. While the console wasn’t shown or mentioned at the annual gaming confab, the story confirmed the “Neo” code name, the fact that the new console would offer enhanced Ultra HD 4K graphics, and that it would “sit alongside and complement the standard PS4.”

In other words, this isn’t the PlayStation 5, but rather the “PS4.5,” delivering upgraded graphics on existing titles while keeping compatibility with the game library between both levels of PS4 models. Sony fans are also hoping that the Neo would possibly offer a smoother (read: nausea-free) experience on the company’s forthcoming PlayStation VR add-on, which hits October 13. All-in-one VR bundles could well be a possibility, too.

For Sony, an event right after the US Labor Day holiday would line up perfectly with the ramp-up to the Christmas holiday shopping season. And today’s “save the date” announcement is perfectly timed to give pause to gamers tempted by Microsoft’s new Xbox One S, which offers 4K video and UltraHD Blu-Ray compatibility, but not more graphically intense gaming.

Microsoft, for its part, has already said that VR and 4K gaming is coming to the Xbox line in the form of its Project Scorpio console, due in late 2017.

So the new microsoft system has UltraHD blu ray compatibility?  Does the new playstation?  I understand it has better graphics capabilities but the uhd blu ray is an important feature to me.

Wait, so, if I still have a happy little PS3 sitting on my shelf, and had decided to simply wait for next gen, this Neo thing isn’t a stand alone jump to 4k?  I’d have to buy a PS4 and this Neo thing?  SO it’s like that chip you could get for your N64 to boost it? *sigh*

@1Opinion No. It will be a different console with improved specs. You will be able to play your PS4 games on it. You will also probably be able to play PS4.5 or PS4 Neo games on the PS4 but somehow it will play with lower quality. (All this is my educated guess, although it definitely won’t be some kind of add-on to the PS4).

No comments in this article about how Apple’s iPhone 7 release keynote is supposed to be on the same day… supposedly. It’s mentioned in this article http://www.macrumors.com/2016/08/10/macbook-pro-lineup-overhaul-4-years/

@bbalsamo1493 Yeah, but so what? It’s an article about a Sony gaming console. Forget Apple.

Excellent!  This is market forces the way they were intended to work.  Microsoft pushing Sony, Sony pushing Microsoft.

    Consumer wins.

If only we could get this genuine dynamic between Windows Mobile, Android, and, Apple….

Okay, if I have to buy a new ps4 and the ps vr component to get the experience, I’ll probably just put together a gaming PC and go Occulus or something else.

@Tr1logy3 You were thinking they were going to send them for free, later, when you bought the PS4 and only just now realized they aren’t?

@JohnTate90210 @Tr1logy3 You might want to read that again. I thought I would have to buy the PS VR hardware, but not an entirely new PS4, again, no.

Scorpio is going to be Somy’s Intel/AMD moment when Intel left AMD behind for good in the CPU market. Scorpio is going to be almost twice as powerful as whatever Sony releases for holiday 2017. It’s over after that.

Miss the ps2 days.  Variety of games, the games were complete when released and no one gave a s#%t about fps or 4k textures lol.

Now gaming consoles are desktop PCs.  These games must be ultra expensive to make now.  How can parents keep up with all this expensive tech?  Do 13 year olds really care if COD is playing at 60fps on their 1080p living TVs?

Too bad that was a way different and healthy era. I went through it with Xbox and PS2, I loved Sonys library of games and I remember the graphics being awesome on Xbox, but I’ll take games over graphics any day. Ive had my PS4 since day one and I can’t believe how many huge patches the games need and their buggy and u can tell the games are getting rushed out for a deadline. I’m just excited about this fall Samsung KS9000 55 inch 4K TV with HDR and PlayStation 4.5

@drbyte You can say that again. I miss the more simpler days, just pop in a disc and you’re all set. Now we have to wait on these huge 40 gigabyte installs, constant updates and patches. Downloadable content, pay to win schemes, and all these other specs is all just becoming a headache. Fell like I’m more excited about Nintendo re-releasing the original Nes.
