Reliance Jio effect: BSNL launches Unlimited BB 249 broadband plan, offers 1GB of data for Re 1

BSNL launches ‘Experience Unlimited BB 249′ broadband plan from September 9 to hook more customers. It is offering 1 GB of data for just Re 1, but there’s a catch.

Reliance Jio has hogged all the limelight post Mukesh Ambani’s announcements at the 42nd annual general meeting of Reliance Industries (RIL). While there is a lot of excitement about the arrival of Reliance Jio on September 5, its ultra low cost data plans and other offers have also started a price.war within the telecom service providers. Recently state-run BSNL has announced that it will soon launch an unlimited wireline broadband plan to compete with Reliance Jio’s offer. The plan allows users to enjoy broadband at Re 1 per GB of download. But there is a catch. To get Re 1 per GB, the users have to somehow use 300 GB of data per month that is when the users can take advantage of this offer.

The attempt looks no less than a step to match up to the offers launched by Reliance Jio, which is offering Rs 50 per GB. “BSNL is going to launch a very cost-effective and affordable unlimited Broadband plan ‘Experience Unlimited BB 249′ from September 9, 2016,” the telecom PSU said in a statement. The BSNL wireline broadband plan is called ‘Experience Unlimited BB 249′, and will be available from September 9, 2016. The company is said to offer 2 Mbps speed under this plan and if customers use the plan continuously for a month, they can download upto 300 GB data by paying Rs 249.

Recently, BSNL also launched free unlimited calls on any network. BSNL customers can now make unlimited free voice calling from BSNL landline to any network mobile and landline in the country on every Sunday. The free calling service is available for all BSNL customers without any charge. BSNL says that the free calling scheme aims at encouraging people use landline phone when they are at home and save on mobile phone bills. The company is already providing free night calling between 9 PM to 7 AM where users can take advantage and make free calls from their BSNL landline to any landline or mobile across the country.

To recap, the Reliance Jio’s data tariffs start from as low as Rs 19, and the talking point is that Jio users won’t ever have to pay for voice calls or messages. Those users who tried out Jio during the preview period will be able to enjoy complimentary access to Jio’s suite of apps till the end of December 2017. As far new users are concerned they will get unlimited usage till the end of this year under a Welcome Offer. Mukesh Ambani also talked about launching ultra-affordable LYF smartphones with support for 4G and VoLTE, and prices for these devices will start from as low as Rs 2,999. He also announced a price drop for the JioFi 2 router, which will now be available for Rs 1,999 only.
