Reliance Jio launch marred with shortage of SIM cards, long queues outside stores, unresponsive customer care

After creating a frenzy across the country for its launch, and heavily discounted tariff plans, Reliance Jio seems to be struggling to keep up with its promises. Customers have been asked to wait for one month to avail their Jio SIM cards.

Last week, RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani finally launched Reliance Jio and also revealed its tempting tariff plans. At the launch, Reliance Jio acted Santa by showering the public with exciting offers, free voice calls for a lifetime and massively discounted data plans. Naturally, since its release, Jio has sent the country into a frenzy, but the company doesn’t seem to be able to handle all the hype it has created. The Jio services went live yesterday for everyone, but buyers are already complaining about shortage of SIM cards, long queues outside stores and endless activation time.

Not surprisingly, since the launch yesterday, almost everyone seems to be rushing to their nearest Reliance stores to get their hands on a SIM card first. Consequently, Reliance Digital stores have been choked with long queues of eager customers outside, and this rush has led to shortage in SIMs, which has of course upset many users. BGR India spoke to Gurudutt Biswal, a 24-year-old PR executive, who was one of the ‘eager customers’ at the Reliance Digital store yesterday, and was part of the Jio delirium. Biswal, who had visited the Reliance Digital Store at the Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, told us about his experience saying, “To begin with, the experience was not good at all.” He said, he went to the particular store in Ambience Mall because it was the largest and he anticipated the rush.

“Although there were less than 30 people at the store when I went there at around 2:00PM in the afternoon, the store had already run out of Jio SIM cards. And what’s surprising is that the employees at the store were unaware of the procedure and plans launched with Reliance Jio,” Biswal stated. “Right now, they are only clearing backlogs of people who had registered with them earlier for SIM cards, however, there were many people at the store who were complaining to them about their SIM cards not been activated since more than 10 days.”

We also called up the Reliance Digital store in Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj to enquire about the Jio SIM card, and were told that the SIMs will be available only after a month, for which we will have to register with the store right now. This issue is not only restricted to this particular store, and a similar issue is being faced by eager customers across the country.

Not surprisingly, social media has been going bonkers complaining of how they were left disappointed after their visit to a Reliance Digital store. Twitter is full of raging users complaining about long queues, stores not having enough SIM cards, customer care numbers not working, and there are those who have been waiting for over a week now to get their Jio SIMs activated. Following are some tweets that give you a fair idea on what the entire situation is with Jio.

When demand outstrips supply, it invariably gives rise to black marketing, and it is little wonder that the ‘free’ SIM cards are being sold for anywhere between Rs 200 to Rs 2,000.

@reliancejio Ur sim cards are being sold in black ranging frm Rs. 200/- to 1000/-
Is this the jio ul promised? Location belgaum

Reliance Jio SIM is getting black-marketed at Rs. 300 by mobile shops in Pune. Now that’s demand and supply gap for India’s digital highway
