Rumor has it: The Apple iPhone 7 will be a massive upgrade over the iPhone 6s

Leaked photos show that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus won’t look all that different from their predecessors. But fret not, there are some major improvements expected that has us excited.

We are into the latter half of August, or that time of the year when rumors around new Apple iPhones reach their crescendo. In less than a month, Apple is expected to take the wraps off the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and if reports are to be believed, then the Apple Watch 2 as well. The rumor mills have been buzzing with all kinds of leaks and we already have a fair idea on what they will look like and the features they will boast. Those who have been closely following the rumors know that the upcoming iPhones will look similar to their predecessors. We have also heard about how Apple is moving from the tick-tock routine for the iPhone to a longer tick-tock-tock one, which means we would see major changes only after three iterations instead of two. The iPhone 7 might not be a major design improvement over the iPhone 6s, which has been Apple’s way of suggesting a new refresh cycle, we still believe it would have enough to keep people interested in the iPhone 7.

Design: The overall design of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus aren’t likely to be drastically different. Going by leaked photos, it won’t be easy to say if a person is holding an iPhone 6s or an iPhone 7. But a closer look will reveal subtle, yet important, changes. For one, the ugly plastic antenna lines bisecting the back panel are going away. Instead these lines are being pushed to the extreme edges, leaving the back panel gloriously minimal.

The 3.5mm audio jack at the bottom is also gone, and in place will be an extra set of speaker grille. With Apple ditching the audio jack, the upcoming iPhones are also expected to be slightly slimmer compared to their predecessors. With the Lightning Port the only one onboard, it will be interesting to see how Apple tweaks the bundled EarPods. But one thing is for sure, the iPhone 7 would have better audio quality with or without the new EarPods.

Colors: With the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, Apple introduced the popular Rose Gold color. But if the leaks are anything to go by, we can expect the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus to be available in some new attractive colors. The Space Black looks gorgeous and should be among the top choices for buyers. But recently, we also came across a new Deep Blue variant, which just oozes class from every angle. With so many options for buyers, you wonder what will happen to the old space grey and silver colors.

Display: With the iPhone 6, Apple introduced a new 4.7-inch variant with HD (750×1334 pixels) display, and a 5.5-inch variant with full HD (1920×1080 pixels) display. The increased size and the bump in resolution was a welcome upgrade, but it is still far behind the competition curve. According to leaks though things are going to change, and the upcoming iPhones are set to get the displays they deserve. The 4.7-inch iPhone 7 is now expected to boast a full HD display, while the iPhone 7 Plus could boast a QHD (2560×1440 pixels) display.

Touch ID: The last major change to the iPhone’s home button came with the iPhone 5s when Apple embedded a fingerprint scanner for Touch ID. Since then, Apple has improved the durability of the button and the fingerprint scanner as well. But with the upcoming iPhones, Apple will make a major change to the Touch ID sensor. The button won’t be clickable anymore, and instead it will feature Force Touch technology. In other words, the sensor will be able to detect the pressure of a user’s touch.

Processor: New iPhones mean more power under the hood. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are expected to be powered by Apple’s next-gen A10 processor. This processor could be manufactured solely by TSMC. Coming to the RAM, the iPhone 7 could continue with the same 2GB of RAM, whereas the iPhone 7 Plus could feature 3GB of RAM.

Storage: Though an iPhone with a microSD card is still a distant dream, Apple is expected to make one important change to the iPhone’s storage. Instead of 16GB, Apple is likely to opt for 32GB as the base variant for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. If that’s not enough, there are reports claiming that the top-of-the-line iPhone could boast a whopping 256GB storage.

Camera: With every new iPhone launch we have come to expect major improvements to the smartphone’s photographic chops. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus won’t be any different. Leaked photos show the iPhone 7 sporting a bigger camera module, and a report from yesterday claims that it could feature optical image stabilization (OIS) as well, which was only reserved for the larger Plus variant earlier.

The iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, is expected to boast a dual-camera setup — a first for Apple. Based on what we have come across so far, one of the lenses is expected to capture still photos, while the other lens could be used for 2-3x optical zoom and for improved low-light performance. Last year, Apple acquired a camera technology firm LinX, which specializes in dual-lens technology. Recently, an Apple patent also showed off a split-screen viewfinder – allowing users to view full image in the wide-angle lens and zoom in with the telephoto lens.

Durability: Another welcome feature of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be their toughness. Apple finally seems to answering the prayers of people who have lost their iPhones because they came in touch with water. The upcoming iPhones however are expected to boast water and dust resistant capabilities.

In essence, with the iPhone 7, Apple is expected to upgrade almost every aspect barring the design. And that isn’t a bad thing, really.
