Sony working on upgraded PlayStation 4 with 4K support, could be called PlayStation 4.5: Report

Sony is reportedly working on a refreshed PlayStation 4 console that will sport a slightly faster processor and GPU to support 4K gaming.

Nearly three years after launching the PlayStation 4 gaming console, Sony is reportedly working on a slightly upgraded version. Citing unnamed ‘developer sources,’ Kotaku reports that the upgraded PlayStation 4 version will come with support for 4K gaming. Along with slightly updated hardware, the upgraded PlayStation 4 could be called as PlayStation 4.5. (We hope Sony calls it something more sensible like PlayStation 4K.)

Sony has already started briefing developers about the upcoming model, the report states. And to support 4K gaming, Sony is likely to add a more powerful processor and GPU chip. While the existing PS4 supports 4K videos and photos, it maxes out at full HD (1080p) resolution for the actual gameplay.

While the move for mid-cycle console upgrade is quite uncommon, it does make sense in the present case. If we look at the television market, Smart TVs with 4K resolution have become affordable compared what it was a couple of years ago. Moreover, gaming console makers may be moving away from the current decade-long hardware upgrade cycle. Microsoft has already announced that the Xbox One could get some hardware upgrades going forward, and Sony taking the same approach wouldn’t be too surprising.

As of now, there is no word on what type of hardware upgrade we will be seeing in the refreshed PlayStation 4.5. But if we look at the existing PlayStation 4, it is powered by an eight-core AMD Jaguar / Kabini x86-64 CPU paired with Radeon 7870-derived GPU and 8GB of RAM. With onboard storage of 500GB, connectivity options such as HDMI out, Wi-Fi, Aux, two USB connectors, an S/PDIF optical audio out and Gigabit Ethernet socket are present in the PS4.

Launched in India for Rs 39,900 in December 2013, you can now buy one for as low as Rs 31,599.
