Three college students, two of whom were below 18 years old, were arrested in Kerala for smuggling drugs by sneaking it in phones.

In the Idukki district of Kerala, three college students were recently arrested after they were found to be carrying marijuana in their phones. People have been smuggling drugs in all sorts of bizarre ways, but the trick to sneak it through the phones may be the first. At least the first to have been caught and noticed. Reportedly, these three students were hiding marijuana inside their phones, at the back of the battery.
While these students, two of whom are minors, were crossing the Vandiperiyar check post in the Idukki district, they were stopped by a Kerala excise officer, who suspected their body language. When they were frisked and the officers went through their stuff, they found 230 grams of the banned substance along with some tablets, which were snick into the phone’s battery slot, reported the The News Minute. Sunil Raj, Excise Inspector, Vandiperiyar told the website, “They have confessed that ganja and other drugs were brought in from Kambam. They have also provided information about their source. Since it belongs to the Tamil Nadu range, we have informed the officials there”. “We also seized some tablets used as drugs. Two were juveniles and one is above 18 years. They are all studying in an ITI,” he added. The three students have been taken under custody for illegal possession of drugs.
Apparently, the excise officer was just running a regular security check when he noticed the three students, and found their body language suspicious. Consequently, the students and their belongings were searched, when they found the banned substance. “We did not expect ganja inside mobile phones. When we checked their phones they were not working. So we got suspicious and checked inside, and found marijuana,” an officer reportedly said.
The debate around legalizing marijuana has been going on for years across the world. Supporters argue that Cannabis, the plant from which marijuana is extracted, has medicinal purposes and should be legalized to be consumed in restricted doses. The possession of the drug is is legal or effectively legal in the Netherlands, Uruguay, and in the US states of Colorado, Oregon, Alaska and Washington. However, possession of the drug is still illegal in India, where the supported continue to debate its legalization.
