No, the space vacated by the 3.5mm audio jack isn’t being wasted. Instead, Apple is using for what it calls ‘barometric vent’.
The missing 3.5mm audio jack on the new Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is still a mystery everyone’s trying to get their heads around. Equally mysterious is how Apple is using the space vacated by the audio jack. Teardowns by the iFixit team showed an extra speaker grille that had nothing but a plastic mould inside where the audio jack used to be. Strange though it may have seemed at first, Apple has finally revealed that this is basically called a ‘barometric vent’.
On the new iPhones, there are two sets of speaker grilles on either side of the Lightning port, but teardowns have revealed that the stereo speaker is only on the right. On the left though, there didn’t seem to be anything but a piece of plastic. But Apple tells The Verge that the grilles on the left are actually vents for the barometer that can measure even the slightest of changes to the altitude, even when you are just walking up a flight of stairs. The piece of plastic though is necessary to keep the entire device water resistant. “With the added ingress protection afforded by the watertight seal, the iPhone uses this baffle to equalize the internal and atmospheric pressures in order to have an accurate altimeter,” the iFixit team says.
As seen before, the removal of the 3.5mm audio jack has also allowed Apple to fit in a bigger Taptic Engine when compared to last year’s iPhones. This engine provides the haptic feedback for the display’s 3D Touch technology, as well as the new Touch ID button. The physical home button on the new iPhones is no longer clickable and instead you can just place your finger for it to work.
An iPhone 7 teardown by the Chipworks team revealed 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM manufactured by Samsung, and a battery capacity of 1,960mAh. In comparison, last year’s iPhone 6s came with a 1,715mAh battery. The teardown also reveals two storage suppliers for the new iPhones — SK Hynix and Toshiba. The unit torn down by Chipworks features an Intel mobile cellular platform that includes two RF transceivers, power management and modem.
