Xiaomi Mi 5s could ditch home button, use Qualcomm’s Sense ID fingerprint scanner instead

Rumor has it Xiaomi may implement Qualcomm’s Sense ID ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner for its next Mi 5s smartphone. Here’s what you need to know about the smartphone.

Xiaomi is set to soon launch the Mi 5s if numerous rumors are to be believed, and the smartphone was recently spotted on AnTuTu benchmarking website, which revealed its key specifications and features. From the leaks so far, the Xiaomi Mi 5s looks to be a top-end smartphone with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 821 processor along with massive 6GB of RAM, which seems to be a new benchmark for performance-centric smartphones like the LeEco Le Max 2 and OnePlus 3. But Xiaomi Mi 5s is rumored to offer more than that. Not only is the smartphone expected to have a dual-camera setup, but Xiaomi is said to be planning on ditching the home button, and use an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner inserted beneath the front glass. Xiaomi will be reportedly using Qualcomm’s Sense ID ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner, but there’s currently no word on how the technology will be embedded on the smartphone.

According to Qualcomm, the Sense ID biometrics technology uses 3D characteristics of the user’s fingerprint to deliver more efficient scanning. The technology also makes it possible for users to use the fingerprint scanner even when users fingers are wet. Another interesting feature of Qualcomm’s Sense ID is that it scans through glass, plastic and certain metals. Essentially, the technology makes it possible for handset makers to embed fingerprint scanner right on the screen. Interestingly, Apple has been highly rumored to implement a similar technology in its future iPhones. Apple has already moved on from clickable home button/fingerprint scanner to touch sensitive virtual home button on its iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. If launched, Xiaomi will be one of the first companies to launch a fingerprint scanner embedded on the screen.

Xiaomi Mi 5s specifications

The Xiaomi Mi 5s is rumored to come with 5.15-inch full HD display. It will have a pressure sensitive display, similar to what Apple offers with its iPhone 6s and above smartphones. It runs on Qualcomm’s top-end Snapdragon 821 processor along with 6GB of RAM and Adreno 530 GPU. The smartphone is likely to come with 256GB onboard storage. It is likely that Xiaomi will launch more storage variants with 256GB being the top-end variant.

On the photography front, the Mi 5s is expected to come with a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/1.9 aperture and 4-axis optical image stabilization (OIS). It will be powered by a 3,490mAh battery with Qualcomm’s Fast Charging 3.0 support. Connectivity options likely to be included are USB Type-C support, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and Wi-Fi.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s is believed to be the follow up to the flagship, Xiaomi Mi 5, which was launched earlier this year. The Xiaomi Mi 5 runs Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM. The smartphone is available in three storage variants, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. It also has 16-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture and a 4-megapixel front facing camera. It is powered by a 3,000mAh battery, and also comes with fingerprint scanner embedded into the home button up front.
