Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Pro smartphone in China today. From price to specifications and features — here are 10 things you need to know about the new smartphone.
As expected, Xiaomi has today launched the much-rumored Redmi Pro smartphone. Xiaomi describes this as a ‘flagship Redmi’ device, and it is set to soon go on sale in China. At the time of filing the story, there is no word on when Xiaomi plans to launch the smartphone in other countries, including India. The highlight of the smartphone is the dual-camera setup at the back, and nearly everything had been revealed via leaks and Xiaomi’s own teasers in the run up to today’s event. Let’s take a look at 10 things you need to know about Xiaomi’s latest Redmi Pro smartphone.
Xiaomi Redmi Pro Price: In line with the earlier leaks, the Redmi Pro has been launched in three variants — 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. The 32GB variant is priced at RMB 1,499 (Rs 15,100 approximately), the 64GB variant is priced at RMB 1,699 (Rs 17,100 approximately), and the 128GB variant is priced at RMB 1,999 (Rs 20,100 approximately).
Design: The overall design is in line with all the leaks we have come across recently. The back of the smartphone is quite similar to the Redmi Note 3, but looks more premium. The front, on the other hand, reminds us of the Xiaomi Mi 5 with the physical home button that also houses the fingerprint scanner. The back gets a brushed metal finish, with the two camera lenses dominating the real-estate. The side has a metal frame with chamfered edges, while the front is covered with a 2.5D curved glass.
Dual Rear Cameras: The highlight of the Xiaomi Redmi Pro is the dual-camera setup at the back. This setup includes a 13-megapixel camera with Sony IMX 258 sensor that captures still images, and a 5-megapixel snapper with Samsung sensor that captures depth information. The primary camera is also accompanied by a dedicated depth of field image sensor and supports Dynamic depth of field, which Xiaomi says helps in capturing DSLR-like bokeh effect.
OLED Display: The smartphone flaunts a 5.5-inch screen with an OLED display. Xiaomi says an OLED display offers greater contrast and vivid colors in comparison to a standard LCD display.
10-core Processor: Under the hood of the Redmi Pro is a MediaTek Helio X25 64-bit deca-core processor. This processor is paired with a Mali-T880 GPU, and is present on the 64GB and 128GB variants. The base variant, on the other hand, is powered by MediaTek’s Helio X20 deca-core processor.
RAM and internal storage: The Redmi Pro has been launched in three variants — the 32GB and 64GB variants feature 3GB of RAM, while the 128GB variant features 4GB of RAM. The smartphone also comes with a hybrid microSD card slot that lets users expand the internal storage.
Fingerprint scanner: Unlike the Redmi Note 3, the Redmi Pro has a fingerprint scanner embedded into the home button up front. Xiaomi says the scanner is built using high-quality ceramic, which ensures a ‘clean and elegant design’.
Battery: The smartphone is backed by a 4,050mAh battery that Xiaomi says is good enough to last a day. Xiaomi also says that the battery comes with fast charging support.
Connectivity: Thanks to the hybrid setup, the Redmi Pro comes with dual-SIM support. In other words, a user can either choose to use two SIM cards, or a combination of one SIM card and one microSD card. The rest of the connectivity options include 4G with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and USB Type-C port.
Software: On the software front, the Redmi Pro runs on Android Marshmallow wrapped under Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 8. The new UI was launched earlier this year, and it comes with a bunch of new features like one-click payment option courtesy of Mobikwik, dual-app that allows one to run two WhatsApp accounts, and dual-space optimization feature to name a few.
