Xiaomi to launch its first-ever drone on May 25

The rumors were true. The Xiaomi drone is launching.

It’s been long rumored that Xiaomi is developing a drone of its own, though details are scarce and far between. In what could be the best hint yet at an imminent launch is a teaser Xiaomi posted on its Weibo account. The teaser doesn’t mention a drone, but instead shows a wooden propeller toy that nearly everyone can recognized from their childhood.

Another teaser posted by Xiaomi shows a camera attached to what looks like an underbelly of a drone. A recent leak also gave a glimpse at an alleged Xiaomi drone app. The screenshots all but confirmed that the Xiaomi drone will come with a built-in camera with support for recording 4K videos. With 4K video recording, Xiaomi looks to be launching a drone aimed at the pros. But as is its motto, expect the drone to cost much lower than an equivalent DJI drone.

Towards the end of last year, Xiaomi filed a patent for a drone that can be controlled via a wearable. The filing showed drawings of the mini quadcopter controlled via the wearable with a few preset gestures. It is too early to guess if Xiaomi’s upcoming drone will look anything like the patent filings.

Xiaomi has long branched far out from just selling smartphones, and it has quite quickly built up an ecosystem containing a range of smart devices. From self-balancing scooters to home products like Mi Air Purifier 2, Mi Water Purifier, Mi Power Strip, and even a Mi Rice Cooker, we have seen it all. It is little wonder then Xiaomi is now looking up at the sky and plans to launch a drone.

The teaser hints at a launch event on May 25. As with most of its smart devices, we don’t expect Xiaomi to launch the drone outside the Chinese market anytime soon.
