Xiaomi to launch its first-ever smart bike on June 23

Xiaomi will reportedly launch a bike for professionals, and a budget-friendly electric bike for commuters.

Besides smartphones, Xiaomi has also been steadily expanding its Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. After launching the Ninebot mini last year, Xiaomi is hosting an event in Beijing tomorrow, and based on the teasers it has released, it could be launching its first-ever smart bicycle. The event kicks off at 2:00PM Beijing time, which is 11:30AM IST.

One of the teasers shows a part of the cycle’s rear tyre as well as the taillight. The second trailer shows a small HUD mounted on the cycle’s handle. This display will presumably show your bike’s speed, distance covered, and maybe some fitness-related parameters as well.

We first came across Xiaomi’s apparent plans to launch a smart bicycle back in March this year. A report claimed that this upcoming cycle is built by IRiding, a startup that is a part of Xiaomi’s ecosystem. This smart bike though is likely to be aimed at professionals with a price tag $3,000 (Rs 201,900 approximately). For this price, you get a cycle that is built using carbon fiber to keep the weight down to 7kg, and also loaded with sensors that will monitor different aspects of the rider.

The report further stated that Xiaomi will launch a budget-friendly electric bicycle, which boasts a small battery-operated motor that assists pedaling. This electric bike will be priced somewhere between $450-$550 (Rs 30,200-Rs 37,000 approximately).

With an increasingly saturated smartphone market, Xiaomi is looking towards internet-connected devices as the way forward. Xiaomi has invested in various startups that are behind some of its recent launches like Mi Band, Mi Air Purifier, Mi Smart Scale, Mi Yeelight, and the recently launched Ninebot mini to name a few.
