YU claims the Yunicorn will ‘redefine flagships’, but will it?
A lot was expected from the Yutopia, but YU’s previous flagship smartphone disappointed. The company is now hoping to shake things up a bit with the launch of its new smartphone — Yunicorn. The company seems to be quite bullish about the Yunicorn, and says that it will ‘redefine flagships’. The Yunicorn is priced at Rs 12,999, and it will be exclusively available on Flipkart. Registrations for the flash sales on Flipkart start from 2:00PM today, and YU says this price is only applicable for a month, after which it will increase to Rs 14,999. YU also says that the smartphone will be available with offline stores later.
The YU Yunicorn boasts a full-metal body with chamfered edges. As seen on the TV ad earlier this week, there is a physical home button placed below the display, which also has an embedded fingerprint scanner.
YU Yunicorn specifications, features: The smartphone flaunts a 5.5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) IPS 2.5D curved glass display and 401ppi. It is powered by a 1.8GHz MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor paired with Mali T860 and 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM. It also offers 32GB internal storage, which can be further expanded up to 128GB using a microSD card.
On the photography front, it is equipped with a 13-megapixel auto-focus rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, PDAF and 1080p video recording capabilities. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture.
The Yunicorn also features a 4,000mAh battery,which the company claims is good enough to last up to two days on heavy usage. It also comes with Fast Charging support. Connectivity options include 4G LTE support, USB Type-C port, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Since Micromax doesn’t have an exclusive partnership with Cyanogen anymore, the Yunicorn runs on a close to stock Android Lollipop. YU calls its new OS ‘Android on Steroids’, which comes with an integrated search bar and a vertical app drawer. The company also says that it will ship the Android Marshmallow update in a few weeks.
Speaking of software, the YU Yunicorn is bundled with the ‘Around YU 2.0′ service out-of-the-box. As the name suggests, this is the second iteration of the services platform introduced with the Yutopia. The idea behind this platform is to offer users access to various services at one place. One only needs to swipe right on the homescreen to open the platform. You can look for food options from Zomato, shopping deals from Scandid, travel deals from Ixigo, and cab options from the likes of Ola, Taxifor Sure, among others.
Around 2.0 introduces a built-in digital wallet, called Udio. YU’s parent company Micromax had collaborated with Visa and TranServ to develop the wallet. Users also get unlimited cloud data storage. For healthcare, YU will be introducing a video calling feature with doctors sometime next month. Lastly, Yunicorn buyers also get six months of Gaana subscription for free.
Another interesting feature on the Yunicorn is the smart gallery called Mi Gallery. In addition to bringing contextual search to the phone, there is also a feature that lets you share a set of photos with your contacts and it will come on their home screen as dynamic wallpaper slideshows. This is courtesy of the investment in American startup MiMedia last year.
On paper, the YU Yunicorn seems like a capable smartphone that maintains a balance between hardware and software. It is however too early to get excited about a YU smartphone without having actually used it. With Yutopia as an example, we will wait till we have used the new smartphone before passing our judgment. Stay tuned for our first impressions.
