Airtel launches new data plan at Rs 50/GB to take on Reliance Jio

Airtel has launched a special data pack for its prepaid 4G customers in Delhi. Under this plan, users get 30GB 4G data for a period of 90 days for just Rs 1,494.

Reliance Jio has stormed the telecom sector with free unlimited high-speed 4G data (4GB per day), unlimited voice calls and access to content services till December 31 under its ‘Welcome Offer’. Other operators such as Vodafone and Idea Cellular have already started feeling the heat and have slashed their 4G data rates. Not to be left behind, Airtel has today announced a special 90 days data pack for its prepaid 4G customers in Delhi, with other circles to follow soon.

To avail the plan, existing Airtel 4G prepaid customers can recharge for Rs 1,495, whereas new users can avail it via first recharge of Rs 1,494 that offers 30GB of 4G data that can be used over a period of 90 days. Effectively, you pay Rs 50 per GB of data, which is the same as what Reliance Jio had claimed it would offer to customers.

Now, coming to the fine print, the special data pack is valid for a period of 90 days from the day of recharge. While Airtel says users get unlimited high-speed 4G data, there is fair usage policy (FUP) thack kicks in after 30GB of usage. Once the 30GB data is consumed, the speed will be cut down to 64Kbps. Airtel is calling it free data, considering earlier subscribers used to get 15GB of data for the same amount.

While the plan is much affordable than before, it still falls short compared to Reliance Jio’s Welcome Offer. While Reliance Jio does not exactly give 4G data at Rs 50/GB, it does give unlimited local and national voice calls and unlimited SMS (cap of 100 per day). However, during the ‘Welcome Offer’ subscribers do not have to pay anything and get 4GB of data every day till December 31. This brings the total data allocation to 120GB per month. However, this is just a limited period offer and currently Jio subscribers are complaining of slow data speeds and inability to make calls to other networks.

On a positive note, it is good to see incumbent carriers take the challenge posed by Reliance Jio head-on and Airtel’s Rs 50/GB data plan is indeed worth commending. The plan, however, has currently been launched only for prepaid users in Delhi and will be rolled out to other circles in the coming days. There is no word whether postpaid users will be able to get similar plans.
