Could Samsung’s rumoured ‘Galaxy X’ foldable phone be closer than we think?

A newly unearthed ‘patent’ has reignited rumours that Samsung is set to launch a foldable smartphone, potentially called the Galaxy X and being developed under the codename ‘Project Valley’.

The renders were spotted by Dutch Samsung blog Galaxy Club, although it’s not clear what regulatory body the filing was made with, so it’s perhaps worth treating them with a healthy dose of scepticism – for the time being at least.

The images show a phone with an elongated flat form factor and a Surface-like hinge that enables it to fold in two to resemble a wallet.

You can get a taste of what might be in the making in the images below.

Rumours of the ‘Galaxy X’ have been floating around for a while now, though we’re no closer to knowing when Samsung might actually debut such a device.

The South Korean electronics giant has been mired in controversy this year following a worldwide recall of its flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 7, so its immediate priorities are no doubt to re-establish the reputation of its existing product lines.

That said, a formal announcement of an exciting new device could go some way to helping Samsung put the Note 7 recall saga firmly in the past – CES 2017, anyone?
