Delhi rains didn’t spare John Kerry either, asks students if they took boats to reach college

Delhi NCR today saw some blood-curdling rains, which refused to stop for hours, ultimately leaving the city soaked with water everywhere. However, social media never lets a day be dull, here are the best moments from the #DelhiRains on social media.

If you are living in Delhi NCR, you very well know that the city isn’t really known for its weather, especially rains. In fact, Delhi or neighboring Gurugram, erstwhile known as Gurgaon and also believed to be India’s Singapore, and rains don’t really go hand in hand. From water logging to massive traffic jams, Delhiites pray to lords that it doesn’t rain heavily during peak hours, afternoons may be. Today is perhaps one of those days when Dilliwallahs are bearing the wrath of rain gods. A monstrous downpour brought Delhi NCR to a standstill.

Interestingly, the Delhi rains managed to have sort of an international impact and it brought the plans of the US Secretary of State John Kerry’s life to a standstill as well. Kerry, who had arrived in New Delhi yesterday for bilateral talks was reportedly stuck in a jam for an hour, consequently his meeting had to be delayed. Today again, John Kerry was delayed by an hour to address students at IIT-Delhi. He said at the town hall meet, “I don’t know how you all got here, you must have needed boats to get here.” The US Secretary of State reportedly also had to cancel his scheduled trip to three religious sites in Delhi after it rained so heavily this morning.

He naturally had to, there were traffic jams and water logging wherever you set sight. Flights to and from Delhi are being delayed and diverted, basically this four-five hours of rain has predominantly crippled the city. The Delhi traffic police has been warning people to stay at home as far as possible, to avoid congestion on road. As expected, people in and around the city took to Twitter, helping each other quite a bit with constant updates about the traffic and water logging conditions in all parts of the city. Social media platforms should be lauded for bringing people closer and making it easier to spread the word. The way the Delhi police has been handling the situation on the social media is quite commendable too. The official Twitter handle of Delhi Police has been constantly updating the traffic status of various part of the city, since last two hours.

The Delhi Police has also been posting tweets to help people judge the levels of logged water on roads. They tweeted suggesting that citizens should use dividers, pavements, trees and poles to use them as a benchmark to judge how deep the water is. Additionally, for people who must hit the road regardless of the heavy traffic warning, the cops suggest how to choose the best route.

Be aware that your car’s brakes may be affected by water intrusion. Drive with caution. #BeRainSafe

If the water is deep enough to submerge your vehicle’s exhaust pipe, then try to avoid the road. #BeRainSafe

Road dividers, trees, pavements, poles, etc. help in judging the depth of waterlogging. #BeRainSafe

But then every cloud has a silver lining. Thanks to social media, we are still able to churn out some fun out of this apocalyptic rain. Some social media users find just the right chord to strike, motivating people to face the dreaded pools and puddles.

Dear Delhi,
Calm Down. You have asked for free water. @ArvindKejriwal is just delivering it.😂😂😂 #DelhiRains

It is surprising how the situation have gotten this worse twice in just two months now. Last month, Delhi NCR, and especially Gurgaon had a terrible experience with the rains. Gurgaon was soaked in water and the city came to a halt for hours. Areas in Gurgaon had water clogged up to waist level. Cars were stuck in pools of water. Bike and car riders had no way to move around and so they were off-roading on footpath. Pedestrians were finding it impossible to move around with the muddy pool formed all over.

But all said and done, kudos to social media on being a major support system during such adversaries. Stay connected, be rain safe.
