Docoss X1 hands-on video, photos posted online to prove Rs 888 smartphone is real

Is the Rs 888 3G smartphone Docoss X1 for real? A new hands-on video on the company’s Facebook page aims to address all your apprehensions about the ultra low-cost smartphone.

Docoss has posted a hands-on video of its controversial Rs 888 3G-enabled smartphone, the Docoss X1, on its official Facebook page. It also posted couple of images of the device on its Twitter account stating the Rs 888 smartphone is for real. The company took to posting the hands-on video and live photos to quell doubts about the smartphone’s authenticity, which is being compared to the dubious Freedom 251 smartphone.

The hands-on video includes unboxing of the device, which reveals the Docoss X1 comes with in-ear headphones, USB cable and plug. The video also shows that the smartphone is capable of running basic applications such as WhatsApp and Facebook. Moreover, the Docoss X1 comes with dual-SIM supports and supports all the Indian operators. Twitter images, on the other hand, reveal the UI of the device showing that it comes with all the popular apps like Google voice search, Play store and YouTube.

Similar to Ringing Bells’ Rs 251 smartphone, Docoss had created a similar buzz with its Rs 888 smartphone Docoss X1, which would be the cheapest 3G Android smartphone. It comes with a 4-inch display, dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 4GB internal storage.

The Docoss X1 features a 2-megapixel rear camera, VGA selfie camera, 1,300mAh battery, dual-SIM card slots, and it runs on Android KitKat 4.4. Though the specifications may not be on par with modern budget Android smartphones, but the ultra low-cost price tag makes it look really attractive, and perhaps too good to be real.

In the meantime, Docoss Director, Shashi Kant Sharma, revealed that the company aims to make money from affiliate marketing. “We’re going in for affiliate marketing. The Docoss X1 will have apps like Flipkart, Amazon and various other Indian e-commerce apps. Each time a Docoss customer installs these apps on their phones, we will get anywhere between Rs 22- Rs 40 for it. This is how we plan to earn from this smartphone. In fact, this is only our first smartphone. We’ll have another one soon,” he told Digit.in. He also revealed that the company has plans to launch 4G smartphones in the near future as well.

On the other hand, the Indian Cellular Association has called it impossible to make a smartphone with the same specifications as the Docoss X1 for Rs 888. “Many of these components are in junk condition and there might be chances of getting them at cheap for small volumes. But even then, the bill of material would be something like $22 (approximately Rs 1,460). Normally, the bill of material would be in excess of $30 (approximately Rs 2,000) and that does not include other costs and taxes,” Pankaj Mohindroo, national president of ICA, told BGR India.
