PS Portal Alternatives

If you want a gaming handheld this winter, then there are plenty of PS Portal alternative devices below to consider.
We’ve also got a guide to the best PlayStation Portal alternatives to look at this winter too.

This week (commencing December 11) we have seen genuine restock action on both sides of the Atlantic, which is encouraging! Also, what with the PlayStation Pulse Explore being fully released recently, we’re hoping that Sony sees the value in making the handheld gaming device available too

This really is giving us terrible flashbacks of 2020 and 2021 during the great PlayStation 5 stock shortages when the console first launched. But we’re here to help still, and we’re keeping an eye on the PlayStation Portal restock situation and updating our PS Portal stock tracker regularly to give you a robust chance of securing one in time for the holidays.

We’re always big advocates for persistence and patience, and this can come good: we’ve seen consistent flashes of stock in the US at Best Buy, Amazon, Target, and Walmart. In the UK, we’ve seen Portal inventory appear (then disappear admittedly) at the likes of Very, Amazon, and Game. Until something more concrete turns up, we recommend sticking with trusted retailers like these and the links on this page. You never know, you might just get lucky.

As a reminder of why we love the Portal, we think that it could be, for many folks, a revolutionary device, opening up extra gaming opportunities and time. It’s proved so with me and I can’t put it down – read more in our full PlayStation Portal review.

Where to buy PlayStation Portal – US

Check stock at Amazon
The go-to behemoth online retailer should be worth keeping tabs on – if stock can reappear anywhere quickly and out of the blue, then this is as good a place as any.View Deal

Check stock at Best Buy
We’ve had reports of stock flashing up at Best Buy regularly today already so this is definitely one to keep an eye on – and certainly in your locality with local stores seemingly getting a few units in to buy.View Deal

Check stock at Target
Target has seen stock so is a worthwhile candidate to keep an eye on given the current state of affairs. We’ve also seen some members of the community utilize Target stores to nail down their Portal.View Deal

Check stock at Walmart
We’d say it’s not a bad idea to keep an eye on Walmart this week if you prefer to shop there, as we’ve seen stock flash up here relatively consistent.View Deal

Check stock at GameStop
The game-specialist retailer did have stock for a long while and has seen fluctuations in recent weeks so is worth a bookmark and keeping an eye on.View Deal

Check stock at Newegg
At one point, Newegg was the only retailer away from PlayStation Direct to still have stock, but now it too is listing the Portal as out of stock. Well worth a check though, as are all these retailers.View Deal

Check stock at PlayStation Direct
PlayStation Direct itself has no stock now, coming good on its promise of “early December” inventory – but that message has now been removed from the page so we’re back to square one.View Deal

For those tempted or willing to take a ‘go big or go home’ approach this winter, then one PS5 Slim bundle deal we’ve spotted comes with a PlayStation Portal included! This deal gets you a PS5 Slim Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 bundle and the snazzy new handheld remote-play device. Check it out here:

PS5 Slim + PlayStation Portal + Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: was $759.98 now $699.98 at Antonline
Save $60 – This bombastic PS5 bundle deal bags you the PlayStation Portal along with a PS5 slim bundle that will have you swimming in brand new PlayStation 5 hardware this Christmas. It’s a superb, chunky, bundle, but a great way to jump in with two feet into PS5 – and a great way to get that elusive PS Portal.View Deal

Where to buy PlayStation Portal – UK

Check stock Amazon
You have to beware of resellers on Amazon now, with scalpers using it as a platform for pushing inflated PlayStation Portal prices – but if any big retailer is going to get stock then it’s a fair chance it’ll be Amazon.View Deal

Check stock at Very
Another popular retailer in the UK for gaming, Very too has no stock right now it seems, but it has been coming and going. One to keep an eye on.View Deal

Check stock at Game
Video game specialist retailer, Game, has been a go-to for Portal stock and is absolutely worth checking in regularly with today.View Deal

Check stock at Argos
This store had stock first thing in the morning UK time, but it looks to have gone. You may get lucky with your postcode and availability so it’s still worth a go.View Deal

Check stock at Currys
Truthfully, we haven’t seen any PlayStation Portal stock at Currys in a long time – but you never know! This is the right link, but due to stock shortages it might take you to the retailer’s PS5 listings.View Deal

Check stock at EE
EE did have some stock in the pre-order period before launch but hasn’t seen any stock since. Definitely worth a look though, especially if you’re an existing EE mobile customer. The EE store now says that it doesn’t know when the site will come back into stock, concerningly.View Deal

Check stock at PlayStation Direct
Stock at the official PlayStation Direct UK storefront has been fleeting. There was that genuine restock on November 22 but only a smattering of splashes and flashes since.View Deal

So there you have it, those are the best places to try to look for a PlayStation Portal restocks right now. We’ll do our best to keep the page updated to direct you to the best places to try as stock levels change. If you’re still on the fence and need some more focused help working out whether the device is for you, then check out our guide to should you buy a PlayStation Portal, as well as our PlayStation Portal vs Backbone One comparison.

PlayStation Portal alternatives

If you’re really keen to pick up a remote play device or a handheld games console like the PlayStation Portal, but need something soon, as a gift for the holidays, or want to bypass the limbo of there being no stock, then we’ve got the latest, lowest prices below on some fine alternatives.

Remember though that none of these alternatives will do exactly what the PlayStation Portal offers – streaming PS5 games over the internet from your PS5 to a dedicated handheld device. You can recreate this in principle with the BackBone One controller and your mobile phone, but it’s worth reiterating that the below aren’t like-for-like replacements.

From the Nintendo Switch Lite to the Backbone One controller, and more, there are some great handheld devices going right now for you to consider instead (and alongside) the PlayStation Portal.

Where to buy PlayStation Portal – FAQs

How much does the PlayStation Portal remote player cost?

The PlayStation Portal remote player costs $199.99 in the US and £199.99 in the UK. Variations in price will be found across different regions as stock becomes more widely available and rolled out.

Is the PlayStation Portal worth it?

We think that the PlayStation Portal is a brilliant remote play device that executes what it’s designed for perfectly. Whether it’s worth it for you will largely depend on your presonal circumstances – if you share the TV with someone in your home, have a family that uses the television a lot, or just want another convenient, easy, handheld way to play your PS5 games then the Portal is perfect.

Is the PlayStation Portal sold out?

As it stands at around 6am ET on December 16, yes, the PlayStation Portal remains out of stock – aside from this mega PS5 Slim bundle deal at Antonline we’ve spotted. However, we have seen consistent flashes of stock appear in recent days so it’s still worth trying – lots of folks are getting lucky!

Will there be any PlayStation Portal restocks before the holidays?

Now that the biggest sales days of the year have passed, all eyes are firmly on the run-up to the holidays – and the good news is that we’ve seen genuine PlayStation Portal restocks in December month already!

We’re hopeful of more to come, and the PlayStation Direct US listing page still says to check back in early December, so that’s promising (even if we are now in mid-December, really).

When will PlayStation Portal stock return?

It feels a bit like reliving the PS5 stock shortage all over again – we are relying on flashes of stocks without any real official word. The grains of hope we can cling to right now are the consistent restocks at the likes of Amazon, and also the message on the PlayStation Direct US page which advises fans to return in “early December for more details on stock availability”. This is a strand of hope we’ve been clinging too recently – but we’re also aware that we’re nearly in ‘mid-December’.

Away from PlayStation Direct, there have been no such similar messages from retailers, but we’re checking all the time so will update you when we have more information.
