Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 SoC to feature 8 cores, faster LTE speeds: Report

Qualcomm’s next-gen flagship mobile system on chip could feature eight processor cores, faster connectivity and much more.

Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 820 processor is already powering the flagship smartphones of 2016, which includes the likes of Xiaomi Mi 5, HTC 10, LG G5 and some variants of Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Now, industry analyst Pan Juitang has shed some light on the next-gen Snapdragon processor.

Citing sources, Juitang mentioned that the upcoming Snapdragon 830 processor is internally called as MSM8998 (the Snapdragon 820 is MSM8996). The processor comes with several key differences, compared to the predecessor, PhoneArena reports. For starters, the new chipset will be made on 10nm fabrication process, whereas the current gen processor is built on 14nm process.

While the Snapdragon 820 SoC is powered by four custom Kyro cores, the Snapdragon 830 SoC will reportedly be powered by eight custom Kryo cores. It will also likely come integrated with faster LTE Cat. 16 modem, compared to the current Cat. 12 on the Snapdragon 820 SoC.

While the release date for the next-gen chipset is unknown, it could make its way either around late 2016 or early 2017. However, before the Snapdragon 830 chipset, Qualcomm is widely expected to release the Snapdragon 823 chipset. It is rumored to run on same number of custom Kyro cores, expect for a big upgrade in clock frequency to 2.8GHz, compared to 2.2GHz on the existing Snapdragon 820.
