Ravi Shankar Prasad lends support to Tim Cook, says ‘Ready to work with Apple’ for next thousand years in India

Cook’s plans to sell refurbished iPhones in India may just have got a welcome news.

Apple CEO Tim Cook is currently in India meeting dignitaries, including PM Narendra Modi. So far, Cook only has had positive things to say about India, was recently quoted as saying that Apple is “thinking about a really long innings in the country. We are here for next thousand years.” IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has responded to Cook’s comments saying that the government is ready to work with Apple.

“I complement Apple chief executive Mr. Cook for a public commitment of one thousand years in India. We are ready to work together,” ET quotes Prasad. He was responding to Cook’s comments during a recent interview when said, “India is much more strategic. We are thinking about a really long innings in the country. We are here for next thousand years. We are not making the most but the best.”

This statement will be welcomed by Cook, who is currently awaiting the government’s permission to open Apple Stores in India. While many reports say that Apple is close to getting the nod, the final approval is still awaited.

Cook will also look at the government’s help for his plans to import and sell refurbished iPhones in India. Apple has repeatedly said that refurbished doesn’t mean used, and these iPhones are as good as new with the standard one-year warranty as well. But Cook’s plans have so far faced opposition from many quarters, who are concerned that this could lead to an increase of e-waste in the country.

Since his arrival in India, Cook has made two big announcements. Apple has opened a technology development center in Hyderabad, which will focus on Apple Maps. This center will create around 4,000 job opportunities. Apple has also announced an iOS app design and development accelerator, which will come up in Bengaluru sometime next year.
