Rio Olympics 2016 became one of the most social and interactive sporting events ever

In the two weeks of 2016 Rio Olympics games over 277 million people had 1.5 billion interactions related to the event. While Swimming was the top searched event across the globe, India talked most about Badminton.

Rio Olympics 2016, that started two weeks ago, came to an end on August 21, with United States topping the medal standings with a total of 121 medals won at the event. Right from the opening day of the event to the closing, this year’s Olympic Games were been watched more closely than ever before. Social media was ticking every second of the day with posts and videos related to the event. According to a statistic provided by Facebook, worldwide, in these two weeks, over 277 million people had 1.5 billion interactions related to the Olympic Games.

And this constant two week long buzz around the games, has made the Olympics 2016 one of the most social and interactive sporting events in the world. If you were just active on Facebook and other social media platforms during these two weeks, you probably wouldn’t even need Google to stay up-to-date with the latest happenings at the games. While Facebook News Feeds were loaded with the instant updates from the events, Facebook itself also made sure its users didn’t miss a moment from the games. Facebook partnered with NBC Olympics team to bring live videos from the games to its platform. Besides that, in order to celebrate the event, Facebook introduced profile frames which users could use like filter around the profile pictures, and out of a total of 15.2 million people who used those frames across the world, the highest number was from India.

According to an infographic shared by Facebook, US swimmer Michael Phelps was the most talked-about athlete during Rio Olympics 2016. Also considering he announced his retirement this year just before his finals, his fans couldn’t get over the news and went abuzz congratulating him for his career, while the people who weren’t too aware of who Phelps was, were endlessly searching about the swimmer on social media. Not just social media, Michael Phelps, also became the most searched swimmer of all time during these Olympic games, reported Google.

While Swimming was the top searched event at the games across the globe, the most-searched Olympic sport during the 2016 Rio Olympics in India was Badminton. According to the Facebook infographic, Brazil was reportedly the loudest across the world when it came to discussing Olympics. And the moment where Zac Efron went to the Olympics Village to surprise Simone Biles, became the most favorite event from the games on Facebook. The post by Efron with Simone Biles saw over one million likes, and thousands of shares.

Google also went out of its way to promote the event. The search engine giant started the Google Doodle Fruit Games, with a new doodle based on the theme every day. As the name suggests, the Fruit Games were basically a mock Olympics of sorts featuring some delicious fruits. Besides that, Google throughout the games, tracked the top Olympic trends on its search engine, sharing it religiously on its official Twitter page. On August 18, Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik, after winning India’s first medal at the games, became the top trending search worldwide.

During the Taekwondo matches, Google also reported that the world was searching how to tie a Taekwondo belt. And on August 19, people across the globe were searching the final dates of the event. These trends reflect how these two weeks got the world entirely submerged in the game and every other thing they searched on the internet was drawn from the Olympic games.

The Rio Olympics 2016 brought the world together in a true sense this year. Patriotism reached sky high this year, and people were rooting for their country and favorite athletes with all their might. And there is no better example than India’s to witness that. For the first time, a sport other than Cricket saw the country coming together with so much support. Even though the Indian delegates at the Olympic games this year returned home with just two medals, the country showed undying support for the sportsmen at the games.
