Samsung today acknowledged that there are issues with the Galaxy Note 7’s battery. It has halted sales for the moment, and will replace all the units regardless of when they were purchased.
Samsung Galaxy Note 7′s fate has gone from bad to worse. Earlier this week, reports surfaced claiming that Samsung would be delaying shipments of the flagship phablet as it would be conducting quality-related tests. Just now, Samsung has confirmed that it is halting the sales of the Galaxy Note 7, and has also issued a global recall.
In line with the report from earlier today, Samsung says that it has found problems with the Galaxy Note 7′s battery, which have been exploding during charging. Samsung says it will replace all the Galaxy Note 7 units, regardless of when it was purchased. Earlier this week, reports claimed that Samsung was conducting quality tests after a few incidents were reported in Samsung’s home country about the device’s battery exploding when put on charging. This more often than not resulted in the device catching fire and potentially putting the user’s life in danger. Ever since launch, users have also found issues with the Galaxy Note 7′s performance that have marred the overall experience.
This global recall will no doubt put a huge dent in the sales numbers. Samsung’s mobile division was under immense pressure after posting consecutive quarters of disappointing results. The success of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, had corrected the course for the company and the Galaxy Note 7 was supposed to augment it even further. However, that clearly doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Even if the problem affects only a small percentage of units, it will be difficult for Samsung to convince users to buy it.
The news couldn’t have come at a worse time for Samsung, with Apple’s iPhone 7 unveiling lined up for next week. The earlier than usual launch of the Galaxy Note 7 was supposed to help Samsung beat Apple and its bigger iPhone 7 Plus. It isn’t clear how long it would take Samsung to get the Galaxy Note 7 our on store shelves again, if it indeed announces a global recall.

It also features a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual pixels technology, 5-megapixel selfie camera, 3,500mAh battery, IP68 certification and connectivity options like a USB Type-C port. For security there is a fingerprint scanner embedded into the home button, and iris scanner, and a vastly improved S Pen stylus.
